Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Cape Town

You will be met by your team leader on arrival at Cape Town airport. If necessary, we can also happily make you a non-binding offer for your flight. From Cape Town, we drive approx. 2.5 hours to Montagu. The first three nights of our training camp are spent at the 4-star Montagu Country Hotel. After checking into your room and recharging with a coffee, we set off on our first ride in the Breede Valley (1–2 hours). This helps us adapt to the left-hand driving in the country. At dinner together in the evening we will discuss the itinerary for the coming days. (-/-/D)

Day 2: Ashton – Bonnievale

After breakfasting together, the groups will split.

Group 1: We cycle through the Cogmanskloof Pass to Ashton and from there on to Robertson. Here, we will follow a sightseeing route through the town and visit the Dutch Reformed Church and the local winery. From Robertson, the route follows the Breede River. We pass many wine estates on the route and we offer the possibility of stopping in for a winetasting. The route ends back in Montagu. (ca. 67 km, 465 m elevation gain)

Group 2: We also begin by cycling through the Cogmanskloof Pass to Ashton, and from here we continue on a hilly route through farmlands to Drew. From Drew, we follow the Breede River and pass through Bonnievale, known for its cheeses. Just past Bonnievale, we stop for lunch at Weltevrede Estate, one of the local wine farms, with a winetasting for those who are interested. The route ends back in Montagu. (ca. 86 km, 730 m elevation gain) (B/-/D)

Day 3: Montagu Rooihoogte Pass

Group 1: Today’s route passes the wine and fruit farms of the arid Klein Karoo, highlighting the vast contrast between the lush green of the cultivated lands and the dry, succulent-rich indigenous vegetation of the Karoo. We follow the same route back to Montagu. (ca. 65 km, 880 m elevation gain)

Group 2: The route for today is similar to that of Group 1, just a bit more challenging. We continue to the Rooihoogte Pass (1240 m) with spectacular views of the Langeberg. The return route ends in Montagu. (ca. 100 km, 1470 m elevation gain) (B/-/D)

Day 4: Barrydale – Tradauw Pass – Swellendam

After breakfasting together, we again split into two groups.

Group 1: We load our bikes onto the trailer and drive by bus to the Op de Tradauw Pass – the start of today’s route. From here, we cycle along the Langeberge towards Barrydale, through the beautiful Tradauw Pass with its varied indigenous vegetation of proteas and ericas to the missionary town of Suurbrak. From here, our route takes us past fertile pastures to Swellendam, South Africa’s third oldest town. We have our lunch in a garden restaurant under old oak trees, and we end the day with a tour of the Drostdy, the historical seat of the magistrate. (ca. 66 km, 495 m elevation gain)

Group 2: The alternative route follows the Langeberge past fruit and wine farms to the top of the Op de Tradauw Pass. From here, the route is the same as for Group 1. (ca. 106 km, 1200 m elevation gain)

From Swellendam, a bus will take us to the harbour town of Gordons Bay, where we spend the night at the charming four-star Manor on the Bay. Gordons Bay offers many restaurant possibilities for dinner. (B/-/-)

Day 5: The Atlantic Ocean

Group 1: Our route departs from the guest house and follows the Atlantic coast to Rooi-Els and then through a landscape of Cape fynbos to the African penguin breeding colony at Betty’s Bay. We follow the same route on our way back to Gordons Bay. (ca. 66 km, 760 m elevation gain)

Group: From Betty’s Bay, our route takes us further to the day’s target destination, the Kleinmond lagoon. After a refreshment break, we turn and head back to Gordons Bay. (ca. 99 km, 970 m elevation gain)

From Gordons Bay we transfer to Cape Town where we will spend the next two nights in the lovely four-star Rosedene Guest House at the foot of Table Mountain. Our dinner suggestion is The Africa Café, specializing in food from the African continent accompanied by great African music and entertainment. (B/-/-)

Day 6: Cape of Good Hope

After breakfast we take the bus to Muizenberg from where the two groups split.

Group 1: The bus takes us further to the Cape of Good Hope. After about an hour’s hike, we reach Cape Point. From here, we continue on our bicycles through the national park where, with luck, we can see ostriches, mountain zebra, eland and bontebok. We then cycle back through Scarborough, Kommetjie and Noordhoek to reach Chapman’s Peak Drive, the country’s most spectacular coastal drive. We then pass through Hout Bay to end in Camps Bay where we enjoy a sundowner overlooking the bay. (ca. 77 km, 950 m elevation gain)

Group 2: From Muizenberg, we cycle along the east coast of the peninsula towards Simon’s Town. You could meet a group of lively baboons along the route to the Cape of Good Hope. After a photo stop, we cycle the short distance to Cape Point. After lunch in this beautiful setting, we follow the same route back to Cape Town as that of Group 1. (ca. 113 km, 1350 m elevation gain)

For dinner, The Africa Café offers specialities from the African continent. And although it’s a bit more expensive, it is always extremely highly rated by our guests. (B/-/-)

Guests travelling in March can take part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour (10 March). Please let us know if you would like to take part when you make your booking. On the day of the Cycle Tour no alternative program will be offered.

After breakfast and depending on weather conditions, we complete our training camp at the top of the 1087 m high Table Mountain (not included).
